FAQ
Q: Do I require LRIT?
A: If you are registered commercial, over 300GT and operate in Sea Areas A1+A2+A3 then yes.
Q: What equipment do I need to buy?
A: It is down to different Flags, but in most cases, you do not need to buy any new hardware. Inmarsat C has been chosen as the platform for LRIT. If you already have a InmarsatC GMDSS or Mini-C type SSAS system then no major hardware investment is required.
Q: How is the information used?
A: Four position reports per day are used for LRIT. This Automatic Position Report (APR) transmits three essential items - The identity of the ship, the position of the ship, and the date and time of the position. This information is securely sent to the Flag. They will share this information with other Flags if and when your vessel enters their jurisdiction.
Q: What do I have to do?
A: You have to ensure that your InmarsatC hardware is LRIT compliant. To do this, you need to get your hardware conformance tested and obtain a test certificate. OceanWeb can undertake this on your behalf.
